Charleston Grey watermelon was introduced by the Southeastern Vegetable Breeding Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina in 1954. The fruits produced by Charleston Grey are large, cylindrical-shaped, light greenish gray, weighing between 28-35 lbs. They measure 22" long by 10" across. When sliced open, the juicy, crisp, firm red flesh oozes with a rich watermelon flavor. The thick rind of the Charleston Grey watermelon helps protect it during transportation to the beach house or market, and also shields it from sunburn while growing in the garden. This variety is suitable for zones 3-10 and offers a great tasting, old-fashioned watermelon flavor. It is easy to grow and produces a generous amount of melons per plant. Charleston Grey watermelons are better than anything you can find in most grocery stores, as this variety is not typically stocked on shelves.
